Imaginary Cube

A solid casting square shadows under orthogonal light sources A cube imagined from three square shadows

About the “Imaginary Cube”

Imagine a solid that, when lit from three orthogonal directions, casts square shadows like those shown. What shape could that be?

A cube is one possible answer. A regular tetrahedron can satisfy this condition as well. We call these shapes “Imaginary Cubes” because three square shadows suggest a cube.

This site presents our research on imaginary cubes and fractal imaginary cubes, as well as a puzzle and three-dimensional sculptures developed from our research.
